Giselinde Kuipers is the principal investigator of the “Sociology of Beauty” project. She is a Full Professor of Cultural Sociology at  the University of Amsterdam, and a member of the Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research (AISSR).  Giselinde has done research in several European countries as well as the US. In 2006 (revised edition 2015), she published Good Humor, Bad Taste: A Sociology of the Joke, comparing Dutch and American humor styles. Over the years, her research interests have gradually moved from humor to beauty. However, Giselinde also has writen about a range of other topics, ranging from translation to doubt, and from transnationalism to bikes and toyboys. What unites all these themes, however, is a persistent interest the social shaping of cultural standards, or: how all these things that feel so ‘natural’ and ‘automatic’ — like what we find funny, or beautiful, or a good TV show, or the most appropriate means of transportation — are shaped by our social surroundings.
